How to become an opinion leader in 4 steps

Aprenda em quatro passos simples a seguir para se poder tornar num líder de opinião reconhecido e credível

The concept of an Opinion Leader is not at all a recent one – it dates back to the 19th century! However, the definitions associated with it are constantly changing, as it is a concept applicable to various areas. This has been a Public Relations tool widely used by communication teams and communication and public relations agencies to boost the visibility of brand leaders and those responsible.

In this article, we will start from the following concept:

An opinion leader is a person or organization recognized by their peers, clients, and industry experts as having a deep understanding of their business, the market in which it operates, and the needs of their clients. They are distinguished by their ability to offer unique perspectives and differentiating ideas. We can say that they are an authority in their field, in that their opinion overrides others, precisely because it is perceived as superior to them.

What are the steps that define an opinion leader?

It is important to keep in mind that it is not something that is established overnight. It involves experience, knowledge, an aptitude for relating to people, among many other things that, as a whole, build the foundation of credibility that characterizes an opinion leader. We can, however, in an evidently simplified way, present some of the lines that delineate this figure.

Read on for 4 key rules for creating an opinion leader:

  1. Be specific

Within your business area, determine a specific market niche about which you will relentlessly seek to learn more. Since you cannot know everything about all the areas that involve you, try to know as much as possible about a certain portion. Establish yourself as an expert in it and base your credibility on it. You don't want to be a commentator, but rather an experienced and relevant voice for the topics you address!

  1. Business isn't everything!

Before being a representative of a brand, don't forget that you are human; just as your customers are human before anything else. In this way, try to act with humanity and empathy. Respond to the problems of your potential customers by offering solutions and advice aimed at solving them and not necessarily related to your business. Show that you are an active voice in the issues that mark the current affairs of the topics you have selected. In the long term, you will see benefits in your credibility and reputation.

  1.  Learn, learn, learn!

All industries are – albeit at different rates – constantly evolving. It is crucial that you pay attention to how this manifests itself, so that you can participate in the debate that will certainly involve it. However, do not limit yourself to learning about the industry in which your business operates; deepen your knowledge at a macroeconomic level, look for patterns. An opinion leader is distinguished by thinking further ahead, however, this way of thinking implies, as is evident, some bases, from which will result, ideally, useful and widely valued points of view.

  1. Nobody has all the answers

Learning is also acquired through the exchange of impressions, through debate. It is not your obligation to know everything. Know how to admit when you don't know and seek to listen, for your own benefit, to what others have to say to you.
